Shameless Self-Promotion, Volume 1

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 12, 2012, 2:38 PM
So, if anyone has been within earshot of me or been looking at my blog for the past couple of months. You should know that I have been working on a Minecraft mod (technically a Buildcraft sub-mod) called Advanced Power Systems. Today, the views on my blog hit 11,000 and are still rising by about 250-350 a day!

Despite my earlier rant about how difficult the Minecraft source is to work with, I've succeeded in making many awesome elements of APS work. Some of which I haven't seen in other mods, at least not in the way I implemented them. Basically, here's a rundown of the cool stuff I've learned to do with APS which are particularly impressive:

- Creating informative, yet simple GUIs (making GUIs at all is a challenge in Minecraft, but this is one of the first things I was complemented on)
- Creating a system for making my machines' textures change dynamically, entirely controlled by the TileEntity (the bit that actually does stuff) without doing any major messing about.
- Creating a mod which is completely modular yet also self-contained, allowing for users to pick the parts of the mod they like and disable the bits they don't (this was done after people said they only wanted certain parts of the mod)
- Making APS use only 1 block ID (something any modded version of Minecraft is rather short on, there's only 255 total and Minecraft itself uses over half of them, this was particularly hard because of the modular nature of APS, but I got it working, and its not also very easy to add new blocks).
- Build up a small fanbase and expand APS using features suggested by users (I see any request as a challenge, so they are usually fulfilled unless they're obscenely complex or out of APS's scope)

Anyway, that over, here's the link to my blog with all the info on APS: dakshen3.blogspot.com

P.S. Tim, I think this was the kind of thing the lecturers wanted in your blog.

5 Things I Hate About The Minecraft Source

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 3, 2011, 10:33 AM
1. The fact that NOTHING is annotated or commented, so I have to read pretty much the whole file and about 5 or so more before I understand what ONE SIMPLE FUNCTION does.

2. The fact that there is NO DOCUMENTATION either. See above.

3. The fact that EVERY SINGLE VARIABLE is called either I, J, or K. Surely it's not that hard to call it ItemID or something that actually DESCRIBES WHAT IT DOES.

4. The fact that there's a WHOLE BUNCH OF FUNCTIONS called 'func_3208' and such. How the hell am I (or anyone) supposed to know what it does?

5. The fact that this was apparently written by PROFESSIONALS.

Anyway, rant over, my first mod for minecraft (well, a sub-mod for buildcraft actually) is almost complete! In about 2 days I've had to learn everything from simply adding something to interfacing with buildcraft's power framework and water pipes, and I've still got a few things left to learn and write before this ONE, SINGLE OBJECT will work properly. As noted above, the Minecraft source code a complete nightmare. 2 days ago I was just typing stuff in, hoping I'd copied from the tutorial thread correctly, no idea whatsoever any of it meant. About 16 hours of coding and confusion later, not much has changed, except now I have a small fortress for sense in the hellish plain of insanity that makes up Minecraft.

P.S. I definitely hate Java now.

Dead World: Help Wanted

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 25, 2011, 7:13 AM
Firstly, my zombie game now has a name, Dead World.
Secondly, I would like some help from people to fill out various areas of the game.

The first area I would like help with is the game's pseudo-tutorial and ingame guide, the Goverment Infected Persons Avoidance Booklet, or GIPAB, not a snappy name I know, but it's exactly the kind of thing a government would issue in a zombie apocalypse, and that's the idea.

I need help filling it with a zombie-related version of the kind of advice in the old Duck and Cover booklets from the cold war. Stuff like how to identify an Infected Person (the Government aren't using the Z word) or how to defend yourself from one. How to find and prepare food, how to secure a building, where to go (although some of this advice should be a bit wrong, given the Government's TYPICAL underestimation of the outbreak's severity). This booklet should, as a rule, contain information which is a bit useful, but not a complete guide to survival.

Some helpful links:
American Duck and Cover Video video.google.com/videoplay?doc…
British Nuclear War Survival Skills www.nukepills.com/docs/nuclear…
Building a Home Fallout Shelter www.survivalring.org/pdf/build…
Zombie Survival and Defence Wiki www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/

I'm not looking for a complete booklet from anyone, just maybe a section or a paragraph on the subject of surviving a zombie apocalypse in the style of a public information booklet printed by a not-paranoid-enough government.

Just upload it to your scraps or something and comment with a link if you have something.

An Unfortunate Turn Of Events

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 7, 2011, 2:20 PM
Well, a couple of days ago I screwed up the repartitioning of my computer and corrupted my windows 7 install. I have now reinstalled it and recovered my files but must reinstall all the programs that cannot repair themselves. So, yeah. Lots of work to do, luckily I've only received one assignment so far.

I think that's about all, wish me luck for sorting this mess out.

I Went Out Tonight! (and some coding crap)

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 20, 2011, 3:48 PM
Firstly, sorry it you get annoyed by me using caps for every word in the title, it just looks better with that style and font.

Anyway, I went out with some of my apartment-mates! Not much, I didn't drink (unless you count cola which Sam and/or Scott bought for me, no idea why they aren't charging me) however it turned out it was comedy night at Lincoln Uni's Tower Bar. Some somewhat good stand-up acts, then a few bad ones (including a wannabe Frankie Boyle with a Hillsborough en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsbor… joke) then the main act (Chris Stoke, if I remember correctly) who was actually pretty good. Then I came back, my feet were hurting a lot after standing for over 2 and a half hours (I assume from being cramped up or something, Idunno). I can only assume the others are still there. At the moment, I'm back in my room, resting my feet and doing some light coding.

Speaking of coding, I have a new project (well, I've had the idea for a while, now I have the drive and am quickly picking up the know-how). It is a Zombie Survival game with a bit of a twist. Instead of the Left4Dead or whatever style of charging through swarms or waves of zombies, this game will be more of a simulation. This means that from the start of the game (which is open-ended btw) it will be the player's task to survive by building a base, collecting other survivors who they may come across (literally, they will be wandering around the world and trying to survive and can occasionally get eatened by the hungry zombies) and above all surviving. It will not involve timed or random waves of zombies that will batter the base, instead the zombies will be simulated properly so that they will only chase the player or attack their base if it alerts them (e.g. if some idiot leaves the floodlights on or accidentally knocks over some bins) and then only by going to where they last saw or heard the alerting thing (i.e. if a gun is fired, they will go to where it was fired, not to the player who fired it if they have run off, unless they see the player, which will be a higher priority for pursuit) this means that the player can have fun will all sorts of totally unscripted antics like traps or decoys or even emptying an area of zombies by simply leading them out like a post-apocalyptic pied piper (yay for quadruple alliteration). It also means that a base can go completely unhassled if it appears to be empty of delicious brains when the wandering undead shuffle past it.

Currently, I have only a few bits of code written, like functions for spawning a zombie and simulating a sound event (which can range from anything like a gunshot to a zombie communicating the whereabouts of its latest prey) and as such is in no state at all to actually do anything. Hopefully though I will soon have at least a little program for simulating and perfecting the zombies' AI, though it will most likely involve watching red zombie pixels chase blue human pixels around either a blank map or some kind of city.

I will put a poll on about whether you all think that when a zombie calls to others (i.e. groans) it should transfer the location of its target (like if the zombies had a kind of language for saying stuff like 'brains. over there') or if it should transfer the location of the calling zombie, making them kind of congregate into a swarm following the leader. Personally, I prefer the former as for me, zombies are all independent, they just all tend to go for the same thing giving the illusion they are swarming, almost like teenage girls and young women when a new clothes store opens, it also means that the zombies will work better when faced with a choice of meals (i.e. two groups of humans), simply choosing the one which is more interesting to them, rather than to the zombie in front of them.

If you are bored of all this coding nonsense, then please don't visit my blog because that is where the actual code will probably end up. But otherwise go there, I may occasionally put up little programs and such I have made since I've found the publish button on Visual Studio.

TL;DR
I went out, didn't get drunk, laughed a bit.
I've started doing what I'm here to learn to do.

The University Of They're Here

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 19, 2011, 1:03 PM
Well, I now reside in Lincoln.
I am now living in the halls of residence in an apartment with 7 other people:
Scott - Sport Science
Amy - Sport Science
Danielle - Sport Science
Sam - Psychology
Christina - English
Luke - Media
Amber - Law

My new room is rather nice, if a bit cosy and I now have most of my posters up, so its feeling quite homely.
The university itself is rather nice too, maybe I'll take some pictures of it, and there are plenty of shops nearby.

Before this gets any more tedious, I'll end by saying that I may or may not be updating this more often now, as well as my somewhat currently dead blog (dakshen3.blogspot.com) which will be mostly coding and such.

Vault Omega Update

Journal Entry: Mon May 30, 2011, 5:10 AM
"In 2071, 6 years before the great war, Vault Tec had completed their quota of vaults for the citizens of the USA, but realising that the threat of massive nuclear apocalypse was inevitable, they started a new project.
This new project was a single vault, larger, deeper and more advanced than any they had built for the public. It was to house renowned scientists from four fields; Radiology, Biology, Psychology & Medicine.
The residents and specifications of the vault were not the only differences to the standard design repeated more than 100 times over across the US. The purpose of this vault was not to harbour the human race against the dangers of nuclear war, but to deal with the aftermath hundreds or thousands of years later. To restore the whole of Earth to it's former glory, so that the human race could once again flourish."

I've now begun working on Vault Omega again, and it's well on its way. The vault itself is done, along with one quest and parts of two other quests, but I've still got plenty still to do.

If anyone wants a link to the current version of Vault Omega, just give me a note.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vs METRO 2033

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 5, 2011, 2:22 PM
So, I recently finished the remaining STALKER game and METRO 2033. Both are amazing games, and I wanted to take a bit of time to give a bit of a comparison, not in a review way, but in a conceptual way.

First, a bit of backstory.
Dunno if many people know it, but METRO and the STALKER series are both made by pretty much the same company. The guys who made METRO (4A Games) split off from the guys who made STALKER (GSC Game World) before any of the games had been made.

The games, METRO and the STALKER series have a strange relationship between them, they are very similar in some ways, but radically different in others, meaning that they are almost parallels. Here's what I mean:

Both games are based on a book, (METRO 2033 for METRO, and Roadside Picnic for STALKER) although METRO is a lot closer to the book's plot while STALKER only really follows the general idea of Roadside Picnic.

Both games are also very plot-focussed, with a rich, powerful atmosphere, good story and characters, and the kind of setting that instantly tells you that nowhere is truly safe.

But while these games, in their concepts are very similar, their executions are almost opposites.

STALKER is a very open game, allowing the player to explore the radioactive wasteland around the legendary Chernobyl, and meet the people trying to make a decent living in the deadly and openly hostile Zone. The gameplay is very much focussed on the player's interactions with the various factions and situations. Clear Sky even had the factions in a small-scale, dynamic war across the Zone.

METRO on the other hand, is very closed and linear. It plays out much more like a book or a film, where the player follows a set course. The game does have alternate endings but unlike in STALKER where they were based on quite grand and very obvious decisions, they are determined by the player's immediate reactions as the story progresses. There are still other characters and several factions, but they are used more as plot elements than a part of the game world.

In conclusion, their ideas are very alike, while the games themselves are far apart. However, both games are very, very good and almost show how a single idea can be executed perfectly in two totally different ways. One, open and lonely, where the player is left to find their own path. And the other, closed and oppressive, where the player's mission necessitates a direct(ish) route.

I recommend both games to anyone and everyone as they are, in my opinion, near masterpieces of interactive storytelling. Once you have played them both and understood the stories, you will see exactly what I mean.

Had a great (if unorthodox) birthday too, and my new phone will be arriving soon!

New Vegas Modding Spree

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 1, 2010, 7:05 AM
So, bit of progress on Vault Omega, but still stuck for names (suggestions please?), but in the meantime, I've been modding in all sorts of random crap!
Here's a few which I can remember:

1) Autocannon
Something I had on Fallout 3, its like a minigun, but it fires explosive shells instead! Really freaking deadly and damn cool, but the shock from the explosives does tend to make you fire just about everywhere. Still, great fun.

2) Fusion-powered Stealth Boy
My pride and joy (apart from Vault Omega), craftable at the workbench, it is a stealthboy that is equippable and gives unlimited duration stealth field, as well as low light vision at night outdoor and when sneaking indoors. Oh, and it awards the player the Spotter, Search & Mark and Enhanced Sensors perks when equipped (and removes them when unequipped). Really sodding useful for my sniper.

3) Atomic Lunchbox
A set of awesome mines crafted at the workbench from a lunchbox, 2 dynamites, a mini nuke, a sensor module and a scrap electronics. This mine works like a normal mine but when it detonates it sets off the mini-nuke, creating a huge explosion. Clean and Dirty versions are available too by adding lead and fission batteries respectively to the recipe. The clean produces less, shorter-duration radiation while the dirty bomb, like its real-life equivalent, baths the area in rads which last for a short while.

4) Achievement Terminal
Since using the developer console is but fun and useful, yet also disables achievements, I created an alternative! This little terminal allows you to choose which achievements to give yourself (yes, these are the actual steam achievements) and it will work as long as you didn't use the console in the current session before using the terminal. Great way to add the achievements you earned but didn't get.

If you have any comments or suggestions for other fun stuff to try, just leave a comment below.

Vault Omega Modding Project

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 10, 2010, 10:20 AM
As I want to go into games design, I thought I might as well have something to show that i can design, or at least mod, games.

SO, when I was down at my dad's and playing fallout New Vegas constantly for lack of anything else to do, I decided to upgrade Camp Guardian (northish of hoover dam) to a proper player base.

So I did that and I thought 'wait a minute, this GECK stuff is easy!', and when I got home I stumbled upon a great idea.

'Why not create my own mod for New Vegas?'

So I thought it over, planned it, and now Vault Omega is well on it's way!

I'm gonna upload a trio of concept drawings I did for the Vault sections, they are photos of the drawings atm, but Ima hopefully nick the pc downstairs long enough to scan them soon.

Anyway, two more things below, first, a description of the lore of Vault Omega. And secondly, a list of things done, things doing and things to do.

It was to house renowned scientists from four fields; Radiology, Biology, Medicine and Psychology.

<<List of tasks>>
Completed:
Design and construction of vault itself
Design of Quests

In Progress:
Furnishing of vault
Implementation of Quests
Design and production of Quest rewards

To Do:
Design of characters
Debugging
Finishing

One final note:
I am stuck for character names, so if anyone can suggest a name for a resident of Vault Omega, done hesitate to comment with it and I'll see if I can fit it in. Western names only please as at the time of the Great War, there is no way people with Eastern backgrounds would be let into the US, let alone a vault. This is not racism, it is simply realism.

Upcoming games, my own game and lucid dreaming.

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 13, 2010, 3:46 PM
So, 3 parts to this.

Part один (One)
A few games coming out soon that I'm really excited about:
X: Superbox (All 5 X games, a crapload of extras and the X Encyclopaedia for 30 quid!)

Fallout: New Vegas ('Nuff said)

PORTAL 2 (Epic, Pure epic)

Part два (Two)
Inevitably back onto the Zombie theme, I've started planning my own game. Its a Zombie Survival Simulator, somewhat like fallout but with more focus on player freedom than on story guidance (the story will be completely open, optional and available anytime). Loads of other stuff planned for it, like procedural map generation, but that's all nerd crap.

Part три (Three)
Finally, I'm trying out inducing lucid dreams (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dr…). Strange that I've always naturally had them but never noticed (I just thought they were normal XD). Not managed to induce one yet, mainly cos of being awoken by noise while only partly asleep. But I've got pretty close, last night I got so close I could feel myself slipping into sleep (then Alice decided she needed the loo in the middle of the night ¬.¬).

Anyway, that's all for now. Its quarter to 12 but luckily I don't need to be in til 11 tomorrow.

Zombie Tag-thing

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 6, 2010, 2:39 PM
My first tag-thing, whatever it's called.

Two parts to this:

Part One
Do the zombie survival quiz www.newgrounds.com/portal/view… and post your scores and the short description under each score
There are 4 result sections and an overall score.

Part Two
Answer the following 6 questions:
1) Do you have a zombie plan, and if so, what is it?

2) What would your name/callsign be post-ZDay

3) What would be your weapon of choice?

4) What one thing could you not live without, even post-ZDay

5) Your closest friend has been bitten and they are now dying in front of you. What do you do?

6) Would you consider yourself Dead Meat, Mall Ninja (takes everything in films as fact, uses stereotypical methods a lot) or a True Survivor?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Finally, my answer/answer template:

Part One
Physical: B
'With a little training and exercise, you'll be ready for an undead outbreak.'

Mental: A
'Your wealth of knowledge allows you to be largely self-sufficient.'

Experience: Z (A*)
'You know all there is to know about zombies, outbreaks and survival, and enjoy zombie fiction in your leisure time. You may have read such books as the 'Zombie Survival Guide'' Yup, I have. ^^

Emotional: F
'Your mantra is "Numbness is the path to survival"'

Overall: Z+
'Your knowledge, strength and will to survive are unstoppable. It would take a nuclear holocaust to remove you from the face of the earth, zombies don't stand a chance.'

Part Two
1) Yes, and everyone who is close to me probably knows it.

2) I would be known as Kylar Grey and my callsign would be Kylar. (Yes, I will be the next Night Angel)

3) If obtainable post-Z, Dragunov SVD. Else if built and powerful, custom coil rifle. Plus short axe/crowbar.

4) Nothing comes to mind at the moment (might add something later, this is stuff you cherish so much you would kill yourself if you lost it)

5) I would kill them as painlessly as possible. Once they are bitten its zed or dead.

6) I would consider myself a True Survivor but only if I can bug in (set up base and prepare) first.

Finally, once you are done tag as many people as you want.
I tag my good buddies :iconkeybladeps2: :icongendrick: :iconsam817:
and my fellow night angel fans :iconanimesaki: :iconchibisakuraninja:

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 27, 2010, 3:53 PM
Lately i have quite wanted to finish my PlanetFall story which i started oh so long ago and have left to stagnate.

The problem is, I really cant be arsed, and even if I did would anyone actually notice?

So if anyone actually wants me to complete the story (I have the whole thing worked out in my head, just not on notepad), just leave a comment saying so and if I get enough to think 'hey look, I wasn't imagining the people who know my account exists!) I think I will be able to finish it.

On a final note, no 'get off the stage' type remarks please Tim.

Amazon

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 8, 2009, 10:45 AM
358/2 days out tomorrow, yay!
Except Amazon tried to pay for it with my OLD card even though I registered my new card instead, so now it wont arrive til Sunday and lotte will be rubbing her copy in my face all  of Sunday as we are going to Nottingham.

On the other hand I now want an Amazon Kindle, one of the reasons is all the eBooks and so on, but also cos it has free unlimited 3G internet almost anywhere in the UK (yes I checked almost all of the UK is 3G covered). It also had free unlimited access to wikipedia, making it practically the real life Hitch-hiker's Guide, which i would absolutely love to have. As such, if i bought myself one, i would make a plastic or metal (probly metal) case in the design of the Hitch-hiker's Guide, complete with lit logo on the front, DONT PANIC on the back and a slot inside for the Kindle, awesome idea huh?

Of course, if i did this id probly end up also carrying a small flannel around with me all day, as any good galactic hitch-hiker should do.

Anyway, mixed feelings about Amazon at the mo, hopefully i will get 358/2 days on saturday if they dispatch it tomorrow, which they should as its being prepared for dispatch right now and ive set it to express delivery.
